5 Shot Friday

5-Shot Friday, 8/26/16

Hello, and welcome to the 12th installation of 5-Shot Friday, as we round the bend towards Labor Day.

1) 4.5 Million Deaths Annually, From…

No, not from the UN (this is actually the International Agency For Research On Cancer, part of the World Health Organization, in France).

And it’s not quite from cancer, either.

It’s from cancer related to being overweight or obese.

The IARC published its latest assessment in the New England Journal Of Medicine this week, “finding sufficient evidence that excess body fat increased the risk of certain cancers…and adds eight more cancers to the list.”

Numbers don’t tell stories particularly well, but they can act as stark signposts demanding attention. If you’re inclined to prioritize things that deserve your finite attention and resources to improve, change, or avoid…well, 4.5 million.

2) The FutureNow, In A Nutshell

The FutureNow, In A Nutshell

I’m not entirely convinced that west coast entrepreneurs have the inside track on what the future holds, especially those in Silicon Valley and the Bay area. San Francisco is an awfully nice place to visit, but utopia it isn’t.

Not yet, anyway. Nobody’s perfect, and what NoCal and San Diego futurists have in common is that they’re not just theorizing dreamily about how things might turn out. They’re actively involved in making the future now: its technology, its infrastructure, and its direction.

Singularity University’s entrepreneurship faculty chair and VP of SU Labs, Pascal Finette, gives an excellent overview of why you should pay attention to this white hot group of folks.

“Particularly in technology-driven or enabled businesses, we have seen a dramatic drop in the costs of launching your business. In the past, you needed to buy hardware/servers, house them in a datacenter…pay a licensing fee for the operating system and technology stack you used. Today, you use cloud-based infrastructure which you pay for by the hour…and your software stack is largely free as it is open source."

“Combine this with the exponential increase in price/performance for your hardware and software and the spread of better development practices, like agile and lean, and you have the perfect environment for launching companies cheaper and quicker than ever."

“All this is further fueled by an abundance of free learning and reference resources, which enables more people to learn the necessary skills faster and cheaper than ever before. All of this in turn, leads to more people becoming entrepreneurs as the barriers of entry are dropping rapidly.”
